From Code to Courtrooms: How DEBESMSCAT Alumnus Fermo Ramos Transformed Leadership into Impact
When Fermo G. Ramos first stepped onto the campus of Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT) in 2006, he had a modest goal: finish his degree, secure a job, and help support his family. Back then, personal computers were still a relatively new frontier for him, prompting his curiosity to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) program.
He candidly admits he didn’t realize how much high-level mathematics came with the territory, but what started as a simple ambition to understand technology eventually evolved into a remarkable journey spanning public education, law, and higher education leadership.
Today, Attorney Fermo Ramos serves as an Assistant Professor II and OIC-Vice President for Academic Affairs at Colegio de Laurel in Laurel, Batangas—a trajectory built on the leadership and academic foundation he established at DEBESMSCAT.
The Crucible of Student Leadership
For Fermo, the true turning point of his college life wasn’t just inside the computer laboratories; it was in the halls of student government. During his second year, he was elected as a Senator in the College Student Council, a role that thrust him into active public service and sharpened his leadership skills.
His dedication eventually led him to become the Student Regent, carrying the voice and responsibility of the entire student body. Balancing the heavy demands of student governance with a rigorous BSCS curriculum was no easy task, but the support of his community made all the difference.
“I am very thankful to my professors in the Computer Science department because they understood my life as a student leader while simultaneously being a full-time BSCS student,” Fermo reflects, crediting mentors like Ma’am Rowelyn, Sir Wilfred, and Sir Vince for guiding him through those transformative years.
A Multifaceted Professional Odyssey
After graduating in 2010, Fermo’s Computer Science degree proved to be a versatile key that unlocked unexpected doors. Using his degree, he qualified for and passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). Returning to the classroom as a secondary public school teacher, he put his technical training directly to use by teaching subjects like JAVA Programming to the next generation of digital learners.
Driven by a desire to expand his service to the community, Fermo set his sights even higher: law school.
His analytical background in Computer Science paved the way for his legal studies, culminating in a major career milestone when he passed the 2023 Philippine Bar Examination. Armed with his law degree, he transitioned into higher education at Colegio de Laurel, quickly rising to his current executive designation as the OIC-Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Serving the Community: Education and Justice
Today, Attorney Fermo Ramos utilizes his dual expertise in education and law to create a lasting, meaningful impact. At Colegio de Laurel, he shapes academic policy and facilitates quality learning for his local community while actively participating in college extension programs.
Beyond the academy, he dons his legal robes to stand up for the underprivileged. Through the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) and his private practice, he provides free legal services to indigent individuals and vulnerable sectors who otherwise could not afford legal representation.
“As a member of the legal profession, I offer free legal services to people who cannot afford the services of a lawyer,” says Atty. Ramos. “Through the various programs of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, I can extend my legal services to those who need it most.”
Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
Looking back at his journey from a hesitant freshman navigating Math and C++ code to a lawyer and academic leader, Atty. Ramos offers timeless advice to current DEBESMSCAT students who are just starting to discover their own potential:
“To the current students of DEBESMSCAT, just be yourself, be authentic. Do what you want to do, as long as you aren’t stepping on anyone and you respect other people.”
He also reminds young transformers that success doesn’t need to be panicked or rushed.
“There’s no need to rush things,” he adds thoughtfully. “Everything has its own timeline.”
