Read the transcript of our interview with Audimar Villaganas about his journey as a
leadership and cultural program participant in Thailand:

What was the program all about? Where and when did it take place?
The Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) conducted its 9th Global Leadership Program (GLP) hosted by the Master’s Institute Development Academy and Seminary (MIDAS) last August 11-15 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand with the theme “Rethink, Relearn, Reskill”. This program was designed for student leaders who seek healthy personal growth within a comprehensive mindset environment, and for exploring how student leadership can address global challenges and drive change.

How did you get selected to the program? Was there an application process? Describe your application experience.

Originally, there were three aspirants for the program: two officers from the SSC and one from a college student council. However, as there was not enough budget to send all three of us, the OSAS had to choose whoever is most qualified to the program. Given my position at the SSC as the External Vice Chairperson, in which I am in-charge of our external linkages and activities, I got selected to represent DEBESMSCAT. I am incredibly grateful for this because Thailand has always been a dream, and I never imagined it would come true during my college journey.

What were the most important lessons that you gained from the program?

The session covered familiar topics I had encountered in previous seminars in the Philippines, but with deeper exploration and fresh insights. These topics were explored in much greater depth during our discussions, offering fresh perspectives and insights that I hadn’t considered before. One of the key topics was the characteristics of a good leader, emphasizing the importance of being a Charismatic Leader—someone who embodies confidence, has a clear and compelling vision, communicates effectively, and demonstrates empathy and emotional intelligence. We also covered essential skills such as how to become a more effective public speaker, which included techniques for engaging and persuading an audience. Additionally, we discussed the twelve 21st-century skills that are crucial for success in today’s fast-paced world, such as critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy.

The session also highlighted UNESCO’s four pillars of education—Learning to Know, Learning to Do, Learning to Be, and Learning to Live Together—underscoring the holistic approach needed for personal and professional development Overall, I confidently conclude that the session was exceptionally informative and transformative, equipping young leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to be both effective and efficient in their roles. This experience has not only deepened my understanding but also inspired me to apply these insights in my journey as a leader.

What can you say about the country that hosted the program? What were your most memorable experiences about the country?

Thailand is truly one of the best countries to visit, and I wholeheartedly agree with the organizers’ decision to host such a transformational event there. Our program ran from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, giving us ample time to explore Bangkok. Each day, after our sessions, we ventured out to some of the city’s most famous attractions, such as Asiatique, a vibrant riverside night market, etc. The opportunity to experience the local cuisine, shop for unique souvenirs, and interact with the warm and welcoming Thai people added a personal touch to my journey. The breathtaking temples, lively streets, and scenic views were nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Every moment spent in Thailand was filled with discovery and joy, creating memories that will stay with me forever. Although our time for touring was limited, the experiences I had were incredibly fulfilling, leaving me with a strong desire to return and explore more of what this beautiful country has to offer – from its stunning landscapes to its rich heritage. This trip not only allowed me to grow as a leader, but also enriched my personal life with unforgettable experiences.

How do you plan to share the knowledge that you gained from the program and the cultural experiences that you had from the host country to your fellow students in DEBESMSCAT?

This event has left a lasting impact on me, and I am eager to share the experiences and knowledge I gained to my fellow DEBESians. After we conceptualize the activity, I will ensure that everyone receives the essential information they need to become well-rounded and effective student leaders. My goal is to equip them with the tools and insights necessary for their personal growth and to contribute meaningfully to our community. I am committed to fostering an environment in DEBESMSCAT where learning is shared and every student leader is empowered to make a difference.
