August 20, 2024 – DEBESMSCAT, headed by President Arnel Millesca, signed a memorandum of understanding for international collaboration with Kenya’s Tharaka University, whose delegation was headed by Vice Chancellor Peter Muriungi, on August 20, 2024, online via Zoom.
The Memorandum of Understanding for the international collaboration between DEBESMSCAT and Tharaka University provided for the following areas for action: 1) student and staff mobility, 2) staff development, including master’s and PhD scholarships, 3) project development, 4) exchange of academic information and publications, 5) joint research activities, 6) conduct of extension and immersion activities, 7) technology exchange, and 8) other exchanges of academic and cultural nature agreed upon by both parties.
The two higher education institutions also agreed that after a year of working together under the memorandum of understanding, they would explore securing a memorandum of agreement to make the partnership legally binding. Among the collaborative activities that the two institutions shall implement within the year is the conduct of virtual research colloquia to exchange research outputs and plan potential joint research activities.
Tharaka University is an institution of higher learning located in Marimanti town in central Kenya. It was established with the purpose of providing access to quality and affordable university education for the people of its host region and was awarded its own charter on August 2, 2022. The university prides itself on being a center of excellence and a leading institution in matters related to dryland farming, mining, and other areas of national strategic focus, such as engineering.
