February 12, 2025 – DEBESMSCAT warmly welcomed Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Dr. J. Prospero “Popoy” E. De Vera III during his visit to the institution. Accompanied by Atty. Ryan L. Estevez, Executive Director of UniFAST, Chair Popoy was greeted at the airport by DEBESMSCAT President Dr. Arnel B. Millesca and CHED Region V Regional Director Dr. Demetrio P. Anduyan, along with key officials and representatives from private higher education institutions (HEIs).
Showcasing the rich heritage of Masbate, Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) students performed the iconic Lapay Bantigue Dance, a symbol of the province’s vibrant traditions. The festivities continued with a rodeo-themed breakfast at the DEBESMSCAT Ecopark, where the university’s marching band played lively tunes. Chair Popoy and the guests even had the chance to experience horseback riding, guided by the Rodeo Masbateño Inc., immersing themselves in Masbate’s cowboy culture.
In the afternoon, Chair Popoy held an inspiring meet-and-greet session with DEBESMSCAT students, with a special focus on Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) grantees. He personally interacted with students, listening to their experiences and discussing the impact of the government’s Free Higher Education initiative.A unique part of the session featured an object-reflection activity, where lucky students picked items, prompting CHED Regional Director Dr. Demetrio Anduyan, ED Estevez, and President Millesca to share insights and reflections. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions, gaining deeper understanding of CHED’s educational programs.
One of the event’s major highlights was the awarding of a PHP 10 million Institutional Development and Innovation Grant (IDIG) to DEBESMSCAT’s College of Industrial Technology. This grant will be used to upgrade equipment and facilities, ensuring quality education and hands-on training for students.Additionally, Mr. Joshua Beliran, a DEBESMSCAT graduate who ranked Top 10 in the March 2024 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), was recognized by Chair Popoy for his outstanding achievement.
To cap off the memorable visit, Chair Popoy joined students for a sing-along and karaoke session, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
